Moving house with young children

Many of our staff have personal experience of moving house with young children.

In fact we very often have customers ring who are in the process of moving………. some even imminently expecting a new arrival!

If you have toddlers then the trick can be involving them in the move but in the desired way. Young children absolutely love boxes and moving things in and out of them. Give your little one a job that does not impact on the move as a whole, for instance being responsible for packing their own bath toys.

Or perhaps packing a suitcase of special toys that they will want easily accessible. Don’t let your child’s favourite cuddly toy get lost in with all the other boxes!

Even packing supplies can provide much entertainment, but be sure that these are additional items and not those that are urgently required.

Think about different ways of getting your child really involved, pre-schoolers love role play, could they dress up in casual removals style clothes and pretend to move somethings? Would they like to be in charge of collecting the finished tape rolls? Can they keep a clipboard and count all the boxes that leave the house? Could they turn a cardboard box into a lorry by sticking on some paper plate wheels?

Not only do the removals men enjoy a nice biscuit and cuppa. But snacks can also be a key ingredient in the smooth running of the move day when a pre-schooler is present.

Our team always try and identify risks as they are moving, but please be extra conscious that when the men are working there will be more hazards in your home that usual.

Plan for distraction and have clear instructions ready for the removals team, post it notes can help mark what is not to be moved, or a floor plan for the new property. Our office staff are always happy to write notes in advance on the men’s jobsheet if there is anything that you are worried that you may forget.
